Steubenville, OH—The Geneva College women's basketball team got its first win of the season as the squad traveled to play Franciscan University on Saturday afternoon, defeating Franciscan 69-30 to even its record to 1-1 on the season.
Trailing 6-5 early in the first quarter, a layup from junior Callie Ford started 13-0 run to end the quarter, putting the Golden Tornadoes up 18-6, and Geneva never trailed again.
Geneva picked up right where it left off in the 1st quarter by scoring the first five points in the 2nd quarter to extend its lead out to 24-6. Geneva's defense was particularly strong, as it gave Franciscan problems all evening, allowing Franciscan only 10 points in the 1st half as Geneva went into the halftime break ahead 30-10. Ford carried the load offensively with 14 points.
The second half saw more of the same, as the Golden Tornadoes continued to extend the lead out. Geneva finished the 3rd quarter up 49-23, which allowed Head Coach Lori Wynn to extend the minutes of some of her younger players, and they did not disappoint as they outscored Franciscan 20-7 in the last quarter to finish off the 69-30 victory.
Ford led the way again offensively with 26 points, including 6-10 shooting from 3-point range, as Geneva shot an impressive 11-18 from deep as a team. Ford also added 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Freshman Alexis Gates chipped in with 11 points, as Coach Wynn got contributions offensively from ten different players.
"It's great to get a win," Wynn stated. "I'm more excited that we took what we learned from Wednesday's game and got better! We played with much more energy and intensity, and it showed."
The women will return home for the first time this season when they open Presidents' Athletic Conference play by welcoming Washington & Jefferson right before Thanksgiving break. The game will start at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21. The women will also host Pitt Greensburg next week on Saturday, November 25, at 2:00 p.m.
