Message from the Director of Athletics

AD
Van Zanic,
Director of Athletics

Why would a prospective student-athlete choose to make Geneva College his or her home for perhaps the most important four years of their lives? The question is one that our coaches have been answering for many years and one that we love to answer because we believe Geneva College and its athletic department is distinct in many ways.

First and foremost, our coaching staff is intentional on the development of student-athletes both inside and outside of the athletic arena. We believe that success in athletics is an important part of everything we do, but we also understand that growing academically and spiritually is equally important. We are blessed every day to have the opportunity to mentor young men and women and have a chance to impact them in ways that will hopefully affect them for the rest of their lives. We understand that having a student-athlete in our care for four years gives us ample opportunity to work with them on what it means to be an intercollegiate student-athlete and what it means to be a respected teammate and friend. We demand much from our student-athletes, not the least of which is what is asked of them as students in the classroom.

If we win championship after championship and never prepare students for life after college, then we have failed them as coaches. At Geneva College, we welcome the challenge of development both in and out of the classroom. Not only will our coaches challenge their athletes to reach their full potential as players, but our hope is to also make them better people that will have a positive effect on society after they leave our care.

Geneva College has a tradition of athletics that is not easily matched across the country. From the first football game in 1890 to the first-ever college basketball game in 1893, Geneva College has been helping to develop student-athletes in all aspects of their lives for over a century. When our student-athletes put on a Geneva College uniform, they will not only wear the Geneva College name, they will also wear the Geneva College seal that depicts the Holy Bible. It is important for our student-athletes, our fans, our opponents and our coaches to know that every athletic gift comes from our Lord and Savior and playing to honor our Father is the reason we do what we do.

So why would a prospective student-athlete choose Geneva College? The simple answer is to be challenged in all aspects of their lives to reach their full potential and to prepare them for life after college. Our hope and our prayer is that we attract student-athletes that are willing to work as hard as possible in and out of the classroom and to represent Geneva College in a way that is pleasing to Jesus Christ, who will always be at the center of everything we do in our lives.

With 20 intercollegiate athletic programs and over 420 student-athletes, Geneva College athletics continues to thrive in its mission to provide competitive athletic programming for young men and women, who will grow athletically, academically and spiritually.

Blessings,
