Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women Struggle At W&J

Washington, PA—The Geneva College women's basketball team made the one hour trip south to take on the Washington & Jefferson Presidents on Saturday, knowing it would have to play its best game of the season to stay with the second place Presidents.  Unfortunately, W&J proved too strong on the afternoon, and the Golden Tornadoes lost 79-41.  Geneva's record fell to 4-13 overall, 1-9 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while W&J improved to an impressive 14-3 overall record, 9-1 in the PAC.

Geneva fell into a hole right from the start, as W&J scored the first seven points of the game.  Geneva closed to within 9-6, but W&J scored the last 12 points of the quarter to take a 21-6 lead, fueled in part by a number of Golden Tornado turnovers.

The W&J run continued into the second quarter, as the Presidents scored the first four points of the quarter before a layup from junior Callie Ford broke a seven minute scoreless streak for the Golden Tornadoes.  The bucket did little to change momentum, though, as W&J kept hitting shots, particularly freshman Lauren Gilbert who went 5-6 from 3-point range in the half.  By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, Geneva found itself down 47-20.  Senior Lydia Songer led the offense with six points in the half, but Geneva shot just 29% in the half and committed 15 turnovers.

Geneva played better in the second half defensively, and the Golden Tornadoes took better care of the ball, allowing Geneva to be more competitive in the third and fourth quarters.  Geneva continued to struggle offensively, though, as the Golden Tornadoes shot just 24% from the floor.  The final score was 79-41.

"We started slowly and W&J came out hot," Head Coach Lori Wynn commented, alluding to W&J shooting 7-13 from 3-point range in the first half.  "We got some good contributions from our younger players.  We have come back and focus now for Bethany on Wednesday."

Geneva was led by Ford and freshman Lauren Tipton, who both finished with 10 points.  Geneva struggled all game offensively, shooting just 26% from the floor for the game and turning the ball over 23 times.  Gilbert led the Presidents with 17 points.

Geneva returns to Metheny Fieldhouse next Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip off against Bethany College.  Bethany comes in with an 8-9 overall record, 5-5 in the PAC.
