CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team had less than 24 hours to get ready for its game at Clarks Summit on Saturday afternoon after a game at Penn State Altoona on Friday night. Despite the short turnaround, the Golden Tornadoes used a big first half to send themselves on to their first win of the season, 69-32. Geneva improved to 1-1, while Clarks Summit fell to 0-2.
Geneva scored the first nine points of the game, seven of them by sophomore
Alexis Gates (New Waterford, Ohio/Crestview). Clarks Summit tried to stay with the Golden Tornadoes, scoring six quick points to keep within nine points, 15-6, but things only got worse from there for the host Defenders. Geneva finished the first quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 28-6 lead heading into the second quarter.
That run only grew as the game continued into the second period. The Golden Tornadoes scored the first 15 points of the second quarter, making the run 28 straight points for Geneva. It wasn't until four minutes remained before halftime that Clarks Summit finally scored again, and at that point Geneva led 43-6. The Golden Tornadoes finished out the half with a 50-11 lead. Senior
Callie Ford (New Middleton, Ohio/Springfield Local), a night after breaking the school record with 39 points, scored 17 points in the half.
The big lead allowed Head Coach
Lori Wynn to play her reserves almost exclusively in the second half, including getting multiple freshmen important playing time. Ford played only a minute in the half, while most of the other starters checked out early in the third quarter as well. Geneva finished things out with a 69-32 win.
"I thought our starters did a nice job coming out with intensity and taking control," Coach Wynn said after the game. "It gave us an opportunity to get some of our players, who don't get a lot of playing time, some valuable minutes on the floor, and it was encouraging to see them produce."
Ford led the offense with 17 points. Freshman
Shannon Wolfe (Alliance, Ohio/West Branch) added 11 points, while Gates finished with ten. All told, 12 different players scored for Geneva as it shot 50% from the floor.
Geneva continues its season-opening road stretch with a game at Penn State Beaver on Tuesday, starting at 5:30 p.m.
