Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Waynesburg Overpowers Golden Tornadoes

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball game on Saturday against Waynesburg University represented a game between two teams looking for their first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win, and on this night Waynesburg was too strong for Geneva, winning 82-55.  Waynesburg improved to 3-6, 1-3 in the PAC, while Geneva fell to 2-5, 0-3 in the PAC.

The game started well for Geneva, with the Golden Tornadoes jumping out to a 7-0.  Unfortunately, it was mostly downhill from there.  Geneva went scoreless for the next seven minutes, and it allowed Waynesburg to finishing the first quarter with an 11-9 lead.

Geneva responded with another spurt to start the second quarter, scoring six quick points to take a 15-11 lead.  Waynesburg gained momentum back with a 13-2 run to go up 24-17, and the Yellow Jackets would not relinquish the lead again.  Geneva was able to hang around, though, for the remainder of the half, and the Golden Tornadoes kept themselves within striking distance at the break, trailing 33-28.  Senior Callie Ford (New Middleton, Ohio/Springfield Local) led the offense with 10 points.

It was all Waynesburg in the second half, though.  The Yellow Jackets opened the third quarter on a 16-6 run to open up a 49-34 lead, and Geneva would never get it under double digits again.  Waynesburg blew the game open late, as the final margin was the biggest lead of the game for Waynesburg, 82-55.

"Tonight was really disappointing for us," Head Coach Lori Wynn said.  "We really struggled defensively and on the boards.  The good thing is we can get better at those two things."

Ford led the offense with 16 points, while sophomore Lauren Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) added 11 points and seven rebounds.  Geneva shot 42% from the floor, but the Golden Tornadoes struggles with turnovers continued as they committed 28 on the night.  They also gave up 17 offensive rebounds.  Waynesburg was led by Haley Porter who finished with a game-high 26 points.

Geneva has the week off before it hosts Penn State Beaver next Saturday, December 15, at 12:30 p.m.
