Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Geneva’s Season Ends at Bethany

Bethany, WV – If the Geneva College women's basketball team was going to pull off an upset in the first round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs at Bethany on Monday night, the Golden Tornadoes needed to stay close early.  That was the recipe that allowed Geneva to defeat Bethany last month in Metheny Fieldhouse when the Golden Tornadoes hung close for most of the game and then put together a late run to pull off the victory.  Unfortunately, this time around Geneva struggled early which put the team in a huge hole, and the Golden Tornadoes could never recover in losing, 69-41.  Geneva's season ends with an overall record of 8-18, while Bethany's record improved to 12-14 as the Bison advanced to take on Saint Vincent in the next round of the PAC tournament.

The game was tied at 6-6 midway through the first quarter when Bethany began to take over.  Bethany scored the next nine points to go up 15-6 as Geneva struggled to generate any offense.  Bethany eventually finished the quarter up 18-10.

Geneva attempted to keep the game close, cutting the lead to 22-15 on two free throws from senior Jodie Carlson with five minutes remaining before halftime.  From there Bethany effectively put the game away by finishing the half on a 17-2 run to take a 39-17 lead into the break.  Carlson had eight points in the half, but Geneva shot just 24% from the field, including 0-of-8 from 3-point range.

The Golden Tornadoes tried to make a game of it in the second half, led mainly by the offense of junior Callie Ford as she scored 11 points in the quarter, enabling Geneva to cut the deficit to 49-34 at the end of the third quarter.

However, the hole was just too big for the Golden Tornadoes to climb out of, as Bethany scored the first ten points of the final quarter to go up 59-34, and the Bison cruised from there in defeating Geneva, 69-41.

"Bethany played great," Head Coach Lori Wynn said afterwards.  "Unfortunately we struggled to defend early and that was difficult for us to overcome.  I'm so proud of our kids and how hard we played.  Our team accomplished a lot this year and the future looks bright."

Ford led the offense with 20 points, but as was the case too often this season, Geneva just couldn't find enough offense from the rest of the team to support her.  The Golden Tornadoes struggled all night offensively, finishing the game shooting just 28% from the floor, including 2-of-21 from 3-point range.  Senior Kelsea Daugherty, the second leading scorer in the PAC, led Bethany with 22 points.

Geneva and Coach Wynn will now look to build upon this season which saw it return to the PAC playoffs after missing out last year, looking ahead to Ford's senior year and building towards greater success.
