Latrobe, PA – The Geneva women's basketball team was able to hang around with first place Saint Vincent for the first quarter, but the Bearcat defense took over the game in the second quarter and never looked back for a 70-49 decision. With Geneva closing to within one point at 15-14 following a
Callie Ford basket, Saint Vincent scored the next 14 points to extend its lead to 29-14. During the 14-0 run, the Bearcats forced seven Geneva turnovers, which turned out to be the difference in the game.
Geneva fell to 2-12 overall including an 0-7 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, Saint Vincent improved to 13-2 overall and remained undefeated in PAC action at 7-0.
"We need to obviously take better care of the basketball," said Geneva head coach
Lori Wynn. "We can't give a really good team that many extra possessions or eventually they are going to make you pay and that's what happened in the second quarter."
For the game, Geneva gave away the ball 25 times and forced just six Saint Vincent turnovers. The Golden Tornadoes shot 39% from the field, including an impressive 6-13 from three point range. The Bearcats also knocked down six shots from outside the arc while shooting 46% overall from the field.
Geneva's Ford continued to set the scoring pace for the Golden Tornadoes as the only player to reach double figures with a game high 20 points on 8-19 shooting. Saint Vincent's balanced scoring attack featured three players in double figures with nine players entering the scoring column.
The Golden Tornadoes will take another crack at getting their first conference win on Wednesday night when they travel to Thiel College. Geneva returns home next Saturday afternoon to meet Bethany College in a 1 pm matinee tip.
