WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team's losing streak reached 13 games on Wednesday night at Waynesburg University. The Golden Tornadoes fell down early and battled to stay in it, but they could not find a way to pull out the win, losing 76-62. Waynesburg improved to 7-14, 5-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Geneva fell to 2-17, 0-11 in the PAC.
Waynesburg jumped out to an early 11-4 lead six minutes into the game as Geneva struggled offensively. Sophomore
Lauren Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) was Geneva's only offensive threat in the first quarter, as Waynesburg finished the period with a 16-11 lead, with Tipton scoring eight of those points.
Junior
Jeana Luciana (Oakmont, Pa./Saint Joseph) scored back-to-back baskets early in the second quarter to get Geneva to within 19-15. However, Waynesburg prevented the Golden Tornadoes from getting any closer, with the Yellow Jackets taking a 31-26 lead into the halftime break.
Things began to get away from Geneva early in the third quarter. Waynesburg opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 41-28 lead. To make matters worse, Tipton picked up her fourth foul. Despite the deficit, Geneva used a late run in the quarter to get within 47-42, but Waynesburg hit a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter to go up 52-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
Tipton re-entered and scored to open the fourth quarter to get within seven points, but that was as close as Geneva would get. Waynesburg scored the next eight points to go up 60-45, and the Yellow Jackets finished off the win from there, 76-62.
"I'm really proud of this team and the way we battled," said Head Coach
Lori Wynn. "We have been through a lot this year and we are still playing hard. It was a tough loss, but we continue to show spurts of improvement and progress."
Senior
Callie Ford (New Middletown, Ohio/Springfield Local) led the offense with 20 points, doing most of her scoring in the second half. Tipton wasn't far behind, scoring 19 points, while Luciana added a career-high nine points. Turnovers were a problem for the Golden Tornadoes, as Geneva finished with 23.
