NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team traveled to Westminster College on Saturday afternoon for Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action against the Titans, and Westminster was much too strong for the Golden Tornadoes, winning 83-52. Westminster improved to 5-9, 3-3 in the PAC, while Geneva fell to 2-10, 0-5 in the PAC.
Sophomore
Lauren Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) scored the first bucket of the game to give Geneva a quick 2-0 lead. Not much else went right for the Golden Tornadoes, unfortunately. Tied at 6-6, Westminster went on a 14-2 run to take a 20-8 lead en route to a 22-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Westminster opened the second quarter with seven straight points to make it 29-10, putting Geneva into a big hole. A free throw from senior
Callie Ford (New Middleton, Ohio/Springfield Local) finally put Geneva on the board four minutes into the second quarter. Westminster would eventually stretch its lead to 21 points before settling on a 40-25 halftime advantage.
Sophomore
Emily Melnek (Poland, Ohio/Poland) opened the second half with a jumper to close Geneva to within 40-27. Westminster dominated the rest of the quarter from there, though, scoring the next 13 points on its way to a 29-6 run to take a 69-33 lead at the end of the third. The Titans would lead by as much as 39 before finishing off the victory, 83-52.
"Obviously nothing went right today," Head Coach
Lori Wynn said. "We're really struggling right now offensively, but up until today I thought our defense had been playing better. We've clearly got a number of things to correct and improve upon."
Ford led the offense with 17 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. Sophomore
Alexis Gates (New Waterford, Ohio/Crestview) added 13 points and six rebounds. Geneva shot just 29% from the floor and finished with 20 turnovers. Westminster was led by Emily Fromknecht, who finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Geneva returns home on Wednesday to take on Chatham at 5:30 p.m.
