BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – After picking up its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory in dramatic fashion on Saturday, not much went right for the Geneva College women's basketball team on Wednesday night against first place Saint Vincent College, and the Bearcats cruised 90-64. Saint Vincent improved to 20-4, 14-1 in the PAC, while Geneva fell to 3-20, 1-14 in the PAC.
Senior
Callie Ford (New Middletown, Ohio/Springfield Local) scored four early points to make the score 5-4 two minutes into the game. After that, not much went well for the Golden Tornadoes. Saint Vincent went on a 9-2 run to make it 14-6, and the Bearcats increased their lead to 22-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The lead continued to grow, with Saint Vincent increasing its lead to 29-12 early in the second quarter, and Geneva was never in the game from there. After Geneva scored a bucket, Saint Vincent scored 13 straight points to take a 42-14 lead on its way to a 48-23 halftime advantage. Ford had 12 points in the half.
Saint Vincent took its biggest lead of the game midway through the third quarter, 68-28, and that allowed the Bearcats to play most of their bench for the remainder of the game. The final score of 90-64 was as close as Geneva got in the fourth quarter.
"We struggled with our energy all night," said Head Coach
Lori Wynn. "Despite our struggles this season, effort was not something I ever had to worry about, but tonight we just didn't have it. Saint Vincent is a very good team, and when you play like we did tonight, this is what happens. Let's hope that's out of our system so we can get ready for the final game of the season on Saturday against Thiel."
Ford had another huge night, finishing with 28 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds. Sophomore
Lauren Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) added 11 points, despite battling foul trouble much of the night. Geneva shot just 39% from the floor and had 27 turnovers. Saint Vincent finished the game shooting 52% from the floor, with Madison Kollar scoring a team-high 19 points.
Geneva finishes it season on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. with a home matchup against Thiel. It will be Senior Day, with Ford and
Noelle Henry (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) finishing their Geneva careers. The game also marks the end of Wynn's tenure at Geneva as she steps down at the end of this season to focus on her teaching responsibilities at Geneva.
