Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Busy Travel Day for Men’s Tennis Ends With Split

CRESSON, Pa./ALTOONA, Pa. – The Geneva College men's tennis team had its busiest travel day of the year on Saturday, traveling first to Mount Aloysius for a match in the morning and then heading on to Penn State Altoona later in the afternoon.  Geneva dropped the first match, 7-2, but rebounded against Penn State Altoona with a 9-0 sweep.  With the split, Geneva moved its record to 3-3.

In the first match against Mount Aloysius, Geneva picked up just two points.  Freshman Josiah Shaver (Norwich, NY/Norwich) picked up a win in #6 singles 6-3, 7-5.  Junior Jesse Claudio (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and sophomore Eli Grove (Evans City, Pa./Portersville Christian) combined to pick up a win in #3 doubles 8-4.  Sophomore Nate Heidengren (Aliquippa, Pa./Beaver County Christian) lost a tough three-set match in #2 singles 6-4, 4-6, 5-10.

In the second match of the day, Geneva cruised against Penn State Altoona.  Geneva swept the singles with sophomores Alex Beck (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge), Heidengren and Drake Greenstein (Austin, Tx./Stephen F. Austin), junior Alex Greissinger (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy), senior Wesley Larry (Wampum, Pa./Lincoln) and Shaver picking up wins.  Greenstein's win came in three sets after dropping the first set, while Beck and Heidengren each had to win tiebreakers in their matches.

In doubles play, Geneva picked up all three wins as Beck and Heidengren, Greenstein and Greissinger, and Claudio and Grove all paired together to pick up wins.

"I can't say enough about what I saw out of the team today," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "The first match was really tough.  A lot of us hadn't been tested mentally for a while, and we needed to work out some kinks.  However, the way we stepped up in the second match, despite being tired, and played our hearts out, it was a blessing to be a part of that."

The Golden Tornadoes will be off for three weeks, traveling next to South Carolina over spring break to take on Spartansburg Methodist College on Friday, March 15, at 1:00 p.m.
