BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The struggles continued for the Geneva College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at home against Westminster, with the Titans cruising to a big victory, 96-59. The loss is the tenth straight for the Golden Tornadoes, who fell to 1-11, 0-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Westminster improved to 12-3 overall, 5-1 in the PAC.
Senior
Jeana Luciana (Oakmont, Pa./Saint Joseph) opened the game with a three-pointer, and a second three-pointer by Luciana two minutes later evened the score at 8-8. It was all Westminster from there. The Titans immediately went on a 10-1 run. Luciana hit her third three-pointer of the quarter with two minutes remaining in the period, but Westminster still led 18-12 at the first break.
The Titans opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run. A jumper from Luciana pulled Geneva to within nine, 25-16, but it would be the last time the deficit was in single digits. Westminster ended the period on a 14-3 run to take a commanding 42-21 lead into the intermission.
Junior
Emily Melnek (Poland, Ohio/Poland) opened the third quarter with a three-pointer, but the Titans answered with 11 straight points to put the game away, 53-24, and Geneva never threatened again. Westminster scored 30 points in the quarter, leading 72-35 at the end of the period, and the Titans easily finished out the win, 96-59.
"We did not shoot the ball well today, especially in the second quarter," said Head Coach
Michael Grinder. "We also fouled way too many times and gave them too many chances at the foul line. Add to that our inability coming out of the break to focus in defensively to keep us in the game are the ways in which this game got away from us. We knew this was going to be a hard year in a lot of ways, and I am seeing progress in some areas, but when things go bad for us, they seem to snowball very quickly, and that's what happened again today."
Sophomore
Shannon Wolfe (Alliance, Ohio/West Branch) scored a career high 13 points, most of those points coming in the second half, to lead Geneva offensively. Luciana also reached double figures with 11 points. Geneva shot just 24% from the floor. Westminster made 48% of its shots and had six players finish in double figures in a very balanced effort.
The Golden Tornadoes head to Chatham on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. start before returning home next Saturday to face first place Saint Vincent at 1:00 p.m.
