Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Things Go Poorly From the Start for Women at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball game on Wednesday night at first-place Saint Vincent went poorly from the start, and the Golden Tornadoes were never a threat in Saint Vincent's 82-40 victory.  Saint Vincent improved to 18-6, 14-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Geneva fell to 2-20, 1-14 in the PAC.

It's been a tough season for first-year head coach Michael Grinder and the Golden Tornadoes, but one thing Geneva had done in many of its losses was hang with the opponent early on before running out of gas in the second half.  That wasn't the case on Wednesday night.

Saint Vincent put the game away early, opening the game with 22 straight points as the Golden Tornadoes missed their first nine shots and had eight turnovers.  Geneva didn't get on the board until junior April Mann (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian Academy) scored just under seven minutes into the game.  It was the only points of the quarter for the Golden Tornadoes, as the Bearcats held a 29-2 lead at the first break.

The second quarter didn't get much better for Geneva, who still struggled to find the basket offensively.  Saint Vincent scored the final nine points of the half to take a 47-10 lead into the break.  Mann had five points and five rebounds off the bench, with the Golden Tornadoes making just 4-of-31 from the floor, including 0-of-11 from three-point range.

The onslaught continued into the third quarter, with Geneva failing to score for over five minutes until sophomore Paige Repine (Marion Center, Pa./Marion Center) finally knocked down a three-pointer.  At that point the deficit was 57-13.  The shot seemed to finally break the lid for the Golden Tornadoes, who finished the game with 30 points over the final 15 minutes, eventually falling 82-40.

Mann led the team offensively with nine points while grabbing 10 rebounds.  Junior Lauren Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian), who has been so reliable all season for Geneva, had an off-night offensively, finishing with just six points, though she did grab 14 rebounds.  As a team, Geneva finished the game 14-of-67 (21%) from the floor, including 2-of-25 (8%) from three-point range.  Saint Vincent was led by Kayla Slovenec's 15 points.

Geneva finishes the regular season at Thiel on Saturday.  The Tomcats are the one team Geneva has defeated in PAC play this season, and a win in the 1:00 p.m. matchup would clinch a spot in the PAC playoffs.
