Men’s Tennis Prevails in Tight Match at Mount Aloysius

CRESSON, Pa. – The Geneva College men's tennis team traveled to Mount Aloysius on Friday night and the Golden Tornadoes were able to pull out a victory in a close 5-4 match against the Mounties.  Geneva improved to 4-1 on the season, while Mount Aloysius dropped to 6-3.

Geneva finished the three doubles matches ahead 2-1.  Mount Aloysius, who boasts some strong players at the top of its lineup, won in first doubles.  Second doubles proved to be a key match in the contest.  Senior Alex Greissinger (Erie, Pa./Northwest PA Collegiate Academy) and junior Drake Greenstein (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) fell down in the match 4-1 but battled back to win 8-5.  Then in third doubles, sophomore Josiah Shaver (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) and freshman Jacques Guillembet (Ft. Myers, Fla./South Ft. Myers) won more easily, 8-2.

The Mounties won the top three flights in the singles portion of the match, leaving Geneva needing to win the bottom three flights, and the Golden Tornadoes came through.  Shaver won in fourth singles 6-1, 6-2.  Guillembet won in fifth singles 6-0, 6-0.  In sixth singles, senior Jesse Claudio (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) won 6-2, 6-3, securing the 5-4 win.

"Any 5-4 win is always exciting," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "Second doubles ended up being the critical match, so Alex and Drake's comeback win was especially sweet.  We're looking forward to a couple weeks off now, including Spring Break, before we begin PAC matches in March."

Geneva's next match will be its first at home this spring, and it will be the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener for the Golden Tornadoes.  Geneva will host Westminster on Thursday, March 19, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
