Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Offensive Woes Continue for Women’s Basketball at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team made the trip to Waynesburg on Wednesday evening for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup, and after hanging with the Yellow Jackets for a quarter, Geneva just couldn't make shots as Waynesburg pulled away for a 93-58 victory.  Waynesburg improved to 5-16 overall, 4-8 in the PAC, while Geneva fell to 2-16, 1-10 in the PAC.

Senior Jeana Luciana (Oakmont, Pa./Saint Joseph) scored a bucket on the opening possession of the game to put Geneva on the board first.  Waynesburg responded over the next eight minutes to build up a 25-17 lead, but five points by senior Meghan Hirneisen (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) late in the quarter, including a three-pointer just before the buzzer, enabled the Golden Tornadoes to pull within 26-22 at the first break.

However, the Yellow Jackets opened the second quarter with nine straight points to go ahead, 35-22, as Geneva struggle offensively, a theme that would continue for the rest of the game.  In fact, the Golden Tornadoes scored just five points in the quarter as Waynesburg took a big lead, 44-27, into halftime.

Things didn't get much better in the second half, despite a good night from junior Lauren Tipton (Glenside, Pa/Phil-Mont Christian).  Waynesburg continued to extend its lead in the third quarter, with the Golden Tornadoes unable to find a way to slow down the Yellow Jackets.  Waynesburg took a 68-41 lead into the final quarter, and Geneva never got closer than 25 points the rest of the game.  The Yellow Jackets closed out the victory, 93-58.

Tipton finished with 25 points and 16 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season.  Hirneisen also finished in double figures with 11 points.  The offensive numbers were pretty ugly for the Golden Tornadoes, who shot just 26% from the floor, including a 3-of-33 effort (9%) from three-point range.  Waynesburg finished the night shooting 43% from the floor, which more than made up for the fact that Geneva outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 64-49, including pulling down 32 offensive rebounds.

Geneva returns back home on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. matchup with Grove City on Pack the Gym Day in Metheny Fieldhouse.
