OBERLIN, Ohio – The Geneva College women's basketball team suffered a lopsided loss at Oberlin on Saturday afternoon, falling behind big at the half and stumbling to a 99-49 loss. Sophomore Cynthia Stewart (Silver Springs, Md./Paint Branch) was the lone bright spot for the Golden Tornadoes, finishing with a career-high 22 points. Oberlin improved to a perfect 4-0, while Geneva dropped to 1-2.
Stewart opened the scoring with a layup and after an Oberlin bucket, junior Tess Liggett (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana) knocked down a three-pointer to give Geneva a 5-2 lead. A jumper by junior Mia San Nicolas (Sinajana, Guam/Wenatchee Valley College) gave the Golden Tornadoes a 7-4 lead two minutes into the game, but Oberlin responded with 11 straight points to take a 15-7 lead, and Geneva never got back into the game, despite a solid first quarter offensively. Oberlin scored the final five points of the quarter to take a 30-17 lead into the first break.
Oberlin continued its run to start the second quarter, effectively putting the game away by scoring the first eight points to take a 38-17 lead. The Yeoman women continued to break through the Geneva pressure for easy baskets, and the Golden Tornadoes had no answers. Oberlin finished the quarter by scoring the final 15 points to take a 67-28 lead into the break.
The game slowed down some in the second half, as Oberlin went deep into its bench, and Geneva was able to hang with the Yeowomen a little better, with Oberlin finishing off the 99-49 victory.
Stewart was the only Golden Tornado to score more than five points. She finished the game 9-of-16 from the floor, 3-of-5 from three-point range. She also added four rebounds and three steals. As a team Geneva shot just 17-of-75 (22.7%) from the floor, including 8-of-44 (18.2%) from three-point range.
Oberlin countered with a 38-of-78 (48.7%) performance from the floor and dominated the boards, outrebounding Geneva 67-39. Bryana Woodard led four players in double figures with 20 points.
Geneva was scheduled to play Mount Union next Tuesday for its home-opener, but that game has been canceled by Mount Union due to COVID protocols. So the Golden Tornadoes will now be off next week before beginning conference play on Wednesday, December 1, with a road game at Thiel beginning at 5:30 p.m.
