BLUFFTON, Ohio – A strong Ohio Northern squad proved too much for the Geneva College women's basketball team on Thursday afternoon on the final day of the McDonald's of Bluffton Holiday Classic, with the Polar Bears opening up a big lead in the first half on their way to a 101-30 victory. Ohio Northern improved to 9-2, while Geneva dropped to 3-5.
Early three-pointers from sophomore Emily Bucheit (Kane, Pa./Kane) and junior Isabella Roth (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City) helped Geneva stay close at the start, and after a free throw from sophomore Cynthia Stewart (Silver Springs, Md./Paint Branch), the Golden Tornadoes pulled within 10-9 midway through the first quarter. It was all Ohio Northern from there. The Polar Bears finished the quarter on a 15-2 run to take a 25-11 lead at the first break.
Ohio Northern continued its strong play by scoring the first 13 points of the second quarter, and the Polar Bears never slowed down in taking a 56-20 lead at halftime.
The second half didn't improve any for the Golden Tornadoes, who managed just ten points in losing 101-30.
Junior Mia San Nicolas (Sinajana, Guam/Academy of Our Lady of Guam) led the team with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor. As a team Geneva made just 12-of-70 (17%) from the floor, including 5-of-44 (11%) from three-point range.
Geneva returns to conference action next week with a home game against Bethany on Tuesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
