Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men’s Tennis Sees Season Come to a Close in PAC Quarterfinals

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – When a team enters the postseason, it wants to be playing its best with all its players healthy.  Unfortunately, for the Geneva College men's tennis team, the Golden Tornadoes were missing their top player, senior Nate Heidengren (Aliquippa, Pa./Beaver County Christian), who was sidelined due to an injury, and his absence was felt as Geneva fell narrowly in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Quarterfinals to Westminster, 5-4.  Geneva sees its season end with a 3-6 overall record.

Geneva had played Westminster twice earlier this season, with the teams splitting both matches by scores of 5-4.  So the teams knew this was likely to come down to the wire.  Westminster was able to take an early 2-1 lead in the doubles portion of the match, with senior Drake Greenstein (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) and sophomore Jacques Guillembet (Ft. Myers, Fla./South Ft. Myers) pulling out a win in #1 doubles 8-1.

In singles action, Greenstein won his match in #1 singles 6-2, 6-2.  Guillembet also picked up a win in #2 singles 6-2, 6-4.  Junior Josiah Shaver (Norwich, N.Y./Norwin) won in #4 singles 6-2, 6-2, but Geneva couldn't find that elusive fifth point to advance in the playoffs.

"Our guys battled hard today," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "We've played Westminster three times this season and it's been 5-4 every time.  You can't find two teams any closer.  Of course, it would have been nice to get the win, but it's still been a good season."

Geneva loses two seniors in Greenstein and Heidengren, who have been Geneva's top two players all season, so the Golden Tornadoes will have some big holes to fill.
