GROVE CITY, Pa. – It's been a tough last week for the Geneva College women's basketball team, battling injuries and COVID issues that has left the Golden Tornadoes without their full complement of players. Things didn't improve any for the ladies at Grove City on Monday night, as a cold-shooting effort from Geneva saw the Wolverines take control early for an 83-64 win. Geneva dropped its third straight game and fell to 6-8 overall, 5-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Grove City improved to 9-6, 6-3 in the PAC.
Geneva struggled to get any offense going early on as Grove City pulled out an early 11-2 lead, with junior Mia San Nicolas (Sinajana, Guam/Academy of Our Lady of Guam) providing the only Golden Tornado bucket through the first five minutes. Sophomore Abby King (New Geneva, Pa./Albert-Gallatin) knocked down Geneva's only three-pointer of the quarter, but Grove City still led 18-7 at the end of the period as Geneva made just 3-of-19 shots.
The Golden Tornadoes opened with three straight buckets in the second quarter, their best stretch of the first half, but things quickly got away from Geneva, who continued to struggle from the field. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, Grove City had pulled out to a 37-19 lead. The Golden Tornadoes shot just 19% from the floor, with San Nicolas providing 10 of Geneva's points.
Grove City put the game away in the third quarter, as the Golden Tornadoes could never string together enough baskets to get back into the game. Geneva did finally get its offense going in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was too big at that point and Grove City came away with the 83-64 victory.
San Nicolas led the offense with 14 points. Sophomore Cynthia Stewart (Silver Springs, Md./Paint Branch) added 13 points, while King scored 12 points on four three-pointers. Geneva finished the game shooting 29.6%, including an 8-for-30 (26.7%) effort from long range. Grove City shot 37.4% from the floor and was led by Megan Kallock's 19 points.
The women will return home for a game against Westminster on Wednesday night, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
