Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Huge Day for San Nicolas not Enough for Women at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Geneva College junior Mia San Nicolas was almost unstoppable on Saturday afternoon when the women's basketball team traveled to Waynesburg, but poor outside shooting proved costly as the Yellow Jackets came from behind late to pull out an 89-87 victory.  It was the first victory of the season for Waynesburg, who had lost its first eight games, while Geneva dropped to 2-8 overall, 2-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

It was all Waynesburg early, who jumped out to a 17-4 lead in the first four minutes.  Geneva responded with a run, with two three-pointers, one each from freshman Hailey Carroll and sophomore Mackenzie Barricklow, followed by two baskets from San Nicolas, to pull the Golden Tornadoes within 19-14.  Waynesburg, though, managed to hold a 27-18 lead at the first break.

Another bucket from San Nicolas and a three-pointer from senior Isabella Roth pulled the women within three points early in the second quarter, and a free throw from Roth four minutes into the quarter pulled Geneva within one point, 37-36.  Waynesburg responded with a nine-point run to build a double-digit lead again, but the Golden Tornadoes closed out the half well.  Geneva finished the quarter on a 13-2 run, the last a bucket by San Nicolas to head into halftime with a 49-48 lead.

The scored remained close for most of the third quarter until Geneva scored ten straight points late to take a 72-64 lead into the final quarter.

The Yellow Jackets opened the fourth quarter on an 11-1 run to regain the lead.  The game was tight the rest of the way, but a Waynesburg bucket with 44 seconds remaining proved to be the winning basket as Geneva couldn't convert two chances late in losing 89-87.

San Nicolas finished with a career-high 36 points on 17-of-25 shooting from the floor.  However, Geneva was undone by a 7-of-47 (15%) effort from long range.  Roth added 15 points, while Barricklow reached double figures with 10 points.

The women will enjoy a couple weeks off before returning to action when they host La Roche on December 30.
