Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women Fall to First-Place W&J

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team lost 76-55 to first-place Washington and Jefferson (W&J) on Thursday night inside Metheny Fieldhouse.  The victory keeps the Presidents undefeated in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), sporting a 12-1 overall record, 8-0 in the PAC, while Geneva dropped to 2-11 overall, 2-6 in the PAC.

Junior Mia San Nicolas provided all the offense early, scoring Geneva's first ten points of the game, allowing the Golden Tornadoes to maintain an early lead.  Sophomore Mackenzie Barricklow followed with a three-pointer to give Geneva a 13-9 advantage midway through the first quarter.  However, Geneva proceeded to go cold from the field and W&J, powered by its size and inside game, responded with a 17-2 run to close out the quarter in taking a 26-15 lead at the first break.

A jumper by junior Cynthia Stewart cut the lead under double digits briefly to open the second quarter, but the Presidents slowly took over during the period, eventually stretching their lead to 43-25 at the half as the Golden Tornadoes managed to hit just 3-of-18 three-pointers.

The Presidents opened the third quarter with a basket to push their lead to 20 points, 45-25, and W&J maintained that lead for most of the quarter, eventually extending its advantage to 62-41 at the final break.  The Golden Tornadoes never got closer than 18 points the rest of the game in falling 76-55.

San Nicolas led the team with 13 points, while Stewart also reached double figures with 11 points.  The three-point stripe continues to be a struggle for the Golden Tornadoes, who managed to make just 6-of-32 (19%) from long range while shooting 20-of-68 (29%) overall from the floor.  W&J shot 41% and had five players in double figures, led by Megan Dryburgh's 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Geneva continues its three-game homestand on Saturday when the women host Bethany at 1:00 p.m.
