BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday night with a dominating win over a short-handed Thiel College squad, 109-63. That total is the third most points scored in school history for the women's program. Geneva improved to 1-1 overall with the victory.
Geneva jumped on the Tomcats early. Senior Mia San Nicolas opened the game with a bucket, followed by a three-pointer and a jumper from junior Taylor Milroy, all before Thiel got on the board. Midway through the first quarter, a three-pointer from San Nicolas gave the Golden Tornadoes their first double-digit lead of the game, 16-4.
The Tomcats couldn't handle the Geneva full-court pressure, and the Golden Tornado lead continued to grow. A three-pointer with 1:13 left in the first quarter by freshman Aizlyn Thompson pushed the advantage to twenty points, 30-10, and a layup from freshman Monica Lammie sent the women into the first break with a 32-10 lead.
The women continued that run into the second quarter. Junior Lily Ybarra opened the quarter with a three-pointer, followed by another three-pointer from San Nicolas. Lammie followed with a basket, and then San Nicolas knocked down her third three-pointer of the first half, giving the women a 43-10 lead. That finished off a 15-point run for the women, who took a 55-22 advantage into the halftime break. San Nicolas already had a double-double, with 17 points and 10 rebounds, at the intermission. The Geneva full-court pressure also forced 23 Tomcat turnovers in the first half.
The second half brought more of the same. Geneva started the third quarter on a 20-6 run, eventually pushing its lead to fifty points, 85-35, shortly before the start of the fourth quarter. A three-pointer from senior Cynthia Milroy with 4:20 remaining pushed the women over triple digits before closing out the 109-63 win.
San Nicolas finished with a huge night, scoring 31 points, grabbing 16 rebounds and blocking five shots. She also added three assists and two steals for good measure, shooting 12-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Taylor Milroy added 17 points, seven rebounds and seven steals, while freshman Madison Kibler gave the women a spark off the bench with 14 points. As a team Geneva forced 39 Tomcat turnovers, while grabbing 27 offensive rebounds.
Geneva will head out on the road on Saturday when the women travel to Grove City for a 1:00 p.m. matchup with the Wolverines.
