Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women Can’t Sustain Good Start at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team got off to a good start at Chatham on Tuesday night, but the Golden Tornadoes couldn't sustain things as the Cougars used a strong second half to win 92-77.  Geneva dropped to 1-3 overall, 1-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

Junior Taylor Milroy opened the game with a three-pointer, and then both teams went cold over the next five minutes.  Chatham didn't their first basket until over three minutes into the game, while Geneva managed just a layup from senior Mia San Nicolas over that stretch.  San Nicolas added another jumper at the midway point of the quarter that seemed to get both offenses going.  Chatham took advantage of several Geneva turnovers to generate its offense, while the Golden Tornadoes found success at the rim in the halfcourt set.  By the end of the first quarter, Geneva led 22-20.

Chatham opened the second quarter with a bucket to pull even before two buckets by San Nicolas and one from Milroy gave the Golden Tornadoes a 28-22 lead.  A minute later, another basket from San Nicolas seven minutes before halftime pushed the Geneva advantage to 30-23.  However, the Golden Tornadoes went cold over the remainder of the half, only able to score two points, while Chatham continued to take advantage of Geneva turnovers to finish the half on a 14-2 run to take a 37-32 lead into the break.  The women had 17 turnovers in the first half against the Chatham full-court pressure.

Chatham pushed its lead to double digits midway through the third quarter, 56-45.  The Golden Tornadoes pulled within six points, 58-52, after a layup from junior Mackenzie Barricklow, but that was as close as Geneva could get.  The Cougars led by nine, 65-56, at the end of the quarter and then opened the fourth quarter with another 14-2 run to take command of the game, eventually winning 92-77.

San Nicolas and Milroy again led the offense.  San Nicolas totaled 23 points, while adding nine rebounds and seven assists.  Milroy wasn't far behind with 19 points, including three three-pointers.  Turnovers were the story of the game for the Golden Tornadoes, who finished with 37.

Geneva is off for the rest of the week before returning to action next Wednesday with a home game against Franciscan at 5:30 p.m.
