WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team's season came to an end in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Quarterfinals on Monday night, with the Golden Tornadoes falling 78-58 at the top seed in the playoffs, W&J. Geneva finishes the season 6-20. W&J improved to an impressive 24-2 record and advances to the PAC Semifinals.
Geneva hung with the top team in the conference the first five minutes, with two free throws from senior Isabella Roth pulling the Golden Tornadoes within 9-8. However, Geneva went cold over the next several minutes, while W&J heated up.
The Presidents scored the next 16 points of the game behind hot three-point shooting. In fact, when the halftime buzzer sounded, W&J had made 10-of-16 long range shots, while Geneva missed its first 14 three-pointers before sophomore Taylor Haring finally got the Golden Tornadoes on the board from deep in the closing minute. W&J held a 44-27 lead at the break, with Haring's 11 points accounting for almost half of Geneva's points.
The women battled in the second half, keeping the deficit around 15 points until W&J used a 13-2 run late in the third quarter to put the game away. The Presidents then closed out the win in the fourth quarter, 78-58.
Junior Mia San Nicolas had a strong second half for the Golden Tornadoes, finishing with a team-best 16 points. Haring finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Geneva could never get on track offensively, shooting just 22-of-78 (28%) from the floor and 4-of-37 (11%) from three-point range. W&J shot 27-of-66 (41%) from the floor and 13-of-29 (45%) from deep. The Presidents finished with five players in double figures in a balanced offensive attack.
Geneva loses one senior from this year's roster in Roth. The Golden Tornadoes are slated to return almost everyone else as Geneva looks to move up in the PAC standings next year.
