BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team continued its recent strong play on Saturday, controlling its game against visiting Waynesburg from start to finish in an impressive 105-66 victory. The 105 points are the third-highest total in a single game in school history. The win was Geneva's third straight and improved its record to 6-15 overall, 6-10 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), and the victory clinched a spot in the PAC playoffs for the women.
Juniors Mia San Nicolas and Cynthia Stewart and freshman Madi Matthews opened the game with buckets to give Geneva a quick 6-0 lead. After a Waynesburg free throw, senior Isabella Roth extended the lead with a three-pointer, a sign of things to come. The Yellow Jackets managed to hang close for much of the first quarter, pulling within three points multiple times, but Geneva took control over the final two minutes. The Golden Tornadoes outscored Waynesburg 10-3 to take a 26-15 lead at the first break, with sophomore Abby Shoaff and Stewart closing the quarter out with back-to-back three-pointers.
The three-point shooting continued in the second quarter, with Matthews and sophomore Taylor Haring knocking down long range shots early in the quarter to help extend the lead to 37-17. Two minutes later, back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Hailey Carroll pushed the lead even further, 45-19, and Shoaff knocked down two more three-pointers before the end of the half, with Geneva holding a 56-33 edge at the break.
The women put the game away early in the third quarter, with Shoaff, junior Emily Bucheit and Matthews connecting from deep again to push the lead to 70-40 midway through the quarter. Three minutes later, Haring knocked down two three-pointers to increase the advantage to 82-42. The women would extend the lead as high as 101-55 on another three-pointer from Matthews before closing out the 105-66 victory.
San Nicolas and Shoaff led six players in double figures with 15 points apiece in a very balanced offensive attack. Matthews finished with 14 points, Haring 13 points, and Stewart and Roth 11 points each. Roth added a season-high 10 rebounds for a double-double. Freshman Adrianna Campbell also pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds. Geneva shot 37-of-93 (40%) from the floor, 19-of-63 (30%) from three-point range, which is second in school history for most three-pointers made in the game. Eight different players hit at least one long range shot, with Shoaff leading the way with five triples. The women outrebounded Waynesburg 65-41 and forced 26 turnovers.
The women will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Westminster at 7:00 p.m. inside Metheny Fieldhouse. The Golden Tornadoes will be going for their first four-game winning streak in seven years.
