Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men’s Tennis Downs Presidents

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College men's tennis team defeated Washington and Jefferson College on Tuesday afternoon, earning a 6-3 win over the Presidents.  The victory bumped Geneva's overall record above .500 for the first time this year at 6-5, leveling its record in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play at 3-3.

The Golden Tornadoes took two of the three doubles matches to take an early edge.  Freshman Braiden Smalley and senior Jacques Guillembet took #1 doubles, 8-2, while sophomore David Clark and freshman Owen Landis won in #3 doubles, 8-4.

The singles portion of the match saw several evenly matched opponents.  Smalley continued his strong freshman campaign by earning another win in #1 singles, this one by a 6-3, 6-3 score.  Guillembet dropped a very tight match in #2 singles, falling in a third-set tiebreaker 10-8.  Junior Jadon Hooke managed a win in #3 singles 7-6(7), 7-5.  Freshman Daniel Ray pulled out a close match in #4 singles 3-6, 7-5, 10-7.  Senior Jalen Landis also earned a win in #5 singles in another third-set tiebreaker 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.  The #6 singles match also went to a third-set tiebreaker, with junior Gavin Landis dropping a 10-5 decision in the tiebreaker.

"I am really proud of our fight today," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "Several of our guys had comebacks in their sets and matches, pulling out some key tiebreakers late, which allowed us to pull out a win."

Geneva will be right back in action tomorrow with a road match at Thiel, beginning at 4:00 p.m.  With the win today, the Golden Tornadoes stand a good chance to advance to the PAC Playoffs beginning next week.
