GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Geneva College's women's basketball team dominated from start to finish in a big win against Thiel Wednesday evening, leaving the Tomcats' gym with a 105-54 victory. The win pushed the women's record to 7-9 overall, 6-5 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while Thiel remains winless at 0-14 overall, 0-9 in the PAC.
A mid-range jump shot from Mia San Nicolas on Geneva's opening possession got things started for the Golden Tornadoes. A minute and a half later, two three-pointers from Aizlyn Thompson and Taylor Milroy sandwiching an Emily Bucheit steal put the Golden Tornadoes up four. Geneva switched to a full court press halfway through the quarter, and Bailee Fletcher began to dominate off the bench, shooting 5-for-5 in the first quarter en route to 10 points. A 3-pointer from Abby Shoaff in the waning seconds pushed the Geneva lead to 13, but three free throws from Thiel made Geneva's lead 30-20 heading into the quarter break.
After a three-pointer to open the scoring for Thiel in the second quarter, the rest of the period was all Geneva, as the Golden Tornadoes outscored the Tomcats 24-5 in the frame. The quarter-long run was capped by some excellent play from Taylor and Cynthia Milroy, and the former finished the half with 12 points under her belt.
Both teams traded baskets at the start of the third quarter before Thiel went on a 12-2 run to cut the Geneva lead to 21 with 4:49 to play in the frame. Geneva responded with a run of their own, outscoring Thiel 26-6 in the final four minutes of the quarter to give them an 86-45 lead with one quarter to play.
The fourth quarter was more of the same for both sides, with Geneva outscoring the Tomcats 19-9 in the final ten minutes of play. Once the final whistle blew, the Golden Tornadoes' lead was up to 51 points, 105-54, their largest win of the season and one of the largest in recent memory.
Taylor Milroy led the Golden Tornadoes in scoring with 21 points. She was followed up closely by Fletcher, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double in her first game back from an injury she suffered back in November. San Nicolas also posted a double-double, with 12 points and 10 rebounds. While Geneva was clearly the better team in just about every category, they were most notably on the better side of a 32-15 turnover differential, and they outscored Thiel in points off turnovers 38-6. The Golden Tornadoes also hit a season-best 15 three-pointers, on 44 attempts.
Geneva is off this weekend, with their next game coming Wednesday, January 17, against Chatham, who is currently sitting at the top of the PAC standings. When Geneva faced Chatham back in November, the Cougars came away with a 92-77 victory.
