MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team saw its two-game winning streak come to an end at Allegheny on Saturday afternoon, losing to the Gators 77-69. Geneva dropped to 9-11 overall with the loss, 8-7 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while Allegheny improved to 10-9, 9-5 in the PAC.
Sophomore
Bailee Fletcher opened the game win a three-pointer, and a free throw from junior
Taylor Milroy, followed by a bucket from freshman
Monica Lammie, gave the women a quick 6-0 lead. However, after a free throw from Fletcher midway through the quarter gave Geneva an 11-6 advantage, Allegheny scored the next ten points and took an 18-13 lead into the first break.
The second quarter was an even ten minutes. Geneva was never able to regain the lead, but a three-pointer from freshman
Aizlyn Thompson pulled the Golden Tornadoes within 36-32 at the halftime break.
Senior
Mia San Nicolas opened the third quarter with a layup to close within two, but Allegheny answered with a big run to take control of the game. The Gators scored eleven straight points to grab a 47-34 edge midway through the quarter, and Allegheny still maintained a 63-52 advantage at the final break.
A three-pointer from San Nicolas midway through the fourth quarter did pull Geneva within 69-61, and the Golden Tornadoes continued to battle throughout the quarter, but the deficit proved too great. San Nicolas had a couple three-point attempts with less than two minutes left that would have cut the lead down to four, but both missed and Allegheny held on for the 77-69 win.
San Nicolas led the women with 17 points, eight rebounds and six blocks. Milroy also reached double figures with 12 points. Fletcher added nine points and eight rebounds, while Thompson also finished with nine points. As a team, Geneva shot 24-of-80 (30%) from the floor, 7-of-32 (21.9%) from three-point range.
Allegheny finished the game shooting 32-of-82 (39%), including an efficient 5-of-11 (45.5%) from three-point range. Jess Bickard led all scorers with 24 points.
Geneva will look to rebound when the women host Waynesburg on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
