Women’s Basketball Wins Back-and-Forth Battle With Waynesburg

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva women's basketball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with an 86-80 victory over Waynesburg University on Saturday, coming back from an eight-point, fourth-quarter deficit to snag the win. The women showed resilience down the stretch, getting a couple of crucial fourth quarter buckets from junior Anna Ulmer to secure the lead and then the victory. They move up to 4-2 on the season, 1-0 in the PAC, while Waynesburg drops to 4-2, 0-2 in conference play.

Ulmer got the scoring started for Geneva, hitting a layup on the GTs' first possession of the game. The offense continued to click over the course of the opening frame, with sophomores Monica Lammie and Aizlyn Thompson and freshman Jessie Moon all getting buckets as well before the five-minute mark had hit.

A three-pointer by freshman Libby Mallah followed by a layup from junior Emily Garvin and a couple of Lammie free throws gave the Golden Tornadoes their first double-digit lead, 17-7, with 3:47 to play in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets made some baskets to narrow their deficit, but free throws from multiple GTs allowed the women to keep the lead.

Three-pointers from freshmen Alexandra Cozzens and Arionna White pushed the Geneva lead back up to ten points early in the second quarter. Senior Abby Shoaff then knocked down a trey midway through the period, but after that Waynesburg began to chip away. Despite another Geneva three, this time made by freshman Libby Campbell, the Yellow Jackets were able to bring the difference down to just two points by the end of the half, 43-41.

The visitors kept their momentum entering the second half, opening the frame on a 10-4 run to take the lead. Free throws from Ulmer and a couple of baskets by Garvin kept Geneva close, but Waynesburg maintained control as the final quarter break came. With ten minutes to play, the Golden Tornadoes found themselves trailing by five points, 65-60.

Garvin began the fourth quarter with a layup on Geneva's first possession, and she went on to score the first nine points of the frame for the women, cutting the Waynesburg advantage to two in the process. A few minutes later, the GTs got six straight points on layups from Cozzens, senior Mackenzie Barricklow, and Garvin, and suddenly they found themselves back in the lead.

The Yellow Jackets got a layup to fall to tie the score at 75 with 3:48 to play, and that's when Ulmer took over the game. Over the next two minutes, she scored six points and led Geneva on an 8-0 run to put the Golden Tornadoes firmly in control. Down eight points, Waynesburg's comeback attempt at the end fell short, and the GTs took the victory 86-80.

Garvin again led the women in scoring, putting up 21 points total and 11 in the fourth quarter alone. Ulmer was the next highest scorer for the women, totaling 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Barricklow had a terrific game defensively, corralling 13 rebounds to go along with 12 points and a couple of blocks, and Moon also played well off the bench, recording a career-high five assists.

Waynesburg was led by Kalista Friday, who has been the top scorer for the Yellow Jackets this season coming off the bench. She had 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting while also posting four assists. Mia Henkins and Madisen Dayton contributed 12 points apiece for Waynesburg.

The women will remain at home for their next contest, which comes next week right before Thanksgiving break. They take on the Thiel Tomcats on Tuesday, November 26th, at 5:30 PM.
