Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Can’t Recover After Falling Behind to Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. – The Geneva women's basketball team got off to another slow start Saturday afternoon on the road against Saint Vincent College, and they could not find the shots they needed down the stretch to come from behind. Junior Anna Ulmer set career-highs in both points and rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the women dropped their second consecutive game. Their record now stands at 5-4 on the season, 2-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Saint Vincent moves up to 3-4 on the year, 3-1 in conference play.

After two early buckets by the Bearcats, junior Anna Ulmer scored the first points for Geneva by way of a pump-fake that led to a nice driving layup. After a Saint Vincent three-pointer on the next possession, freshman Alexandra Cozzens received a pass on the baseline and laid the ball in to bring Geneva within three points, 7-4. Unfortunately, the Bearcats scored the next ten points to take a double-digit lead midway through the first quarter.

Cozzens was the player to put a stop to Saint Vincent's run, hitting a free throw and another driving layup to slow the home team's momentum. Senior Mackenzie Barricklow scored a layup to bring the Golden Tornadoes within ten, and Geneva appeared to settle down on offense. The women tightened things up to end the quarter, and the GTs went into the quarter break trailing 22-14.

After Saint Vicent opened the second quarter on an 8-1 run, freshman Destanie McCullough scored the first Geneva field goal of the frame by hitting a fadeaway jumper with 6:19 to play, which cut the women's deficit to 15 points. The GTs' started to gain some energy on defense at that point, and two layups by junior Emily Garvin gave the offense some life as well. Ulmer knocked down a long jumper and a three-pointer to bring the women within nine, but Saint Vincent hit a free throw before the half ended, and the Bearcats' lead at the break was 41-31.

Again, Saint Vincent opened the third quarter on a big run, outscoring Geneva 11-2 through the first two and a half minutes. Ulmer and Garvin fought to keep the women in the game, but the GTs found themselves in foul trouble before too long. The Bearcats continued to hit their shots, and Geneva trailed 76-54 by the time the third quarter ended.

The women opened the final frame with seven consecutive points courtesy of two layups from Garvin and Cozzens and a three-pointer by Ulmer. Saint Vincent recovered from the early-quarter blow, however, and responded with a 9-0 run just a minute later. That stretch essentially sunk the Golden Tornadoes' chances of winning, and the Bearcats held on for the rest of the game to take it 97-70.

Garvin scored 19 points to lead the women. Ulmer set career-highs with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Cozzens contributed 10 points and six rebounds off the bench. As a team, the GTs shot just 25-of-69 (36%) from the field, including 3-of-23 from distance, compared to a 34-of-71 (48%) night shooting for the Bearcats. Emily Thompson led Saint Vincent with 19 points.

The Golden Tornadoes are back in action on Tuesday, December 10th, when they travel to Washington and Jefferson for a 6:00 PM tip-off.
