WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Geneva College women's basketball team faced a tough opponent in the Washington and Jefferson College Presidents on Wednesday evening, a team who has not lost a Presidents'Â Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup since mid-November. The Golden Tornadoes lost by a score of 91-71. With the loss, Geneva's record drops to 11-12 overall, 10-8 in conference play, and W&J remains atop the conference with a 20-2 record overall, 16-1 in the PAC.
The Presidents dominated the play early, opening the game on a 16-1 run. Geneva didn't get its first shot to fall from the field until the 6:12 mark of the first quarter when junior Taylor Milroy finally hit a layup. That basket jump-started the Golden Tornadoes offense a bit, and senior Mia San Nicolas scored the next six Geneva points. The GTs went into the quarter break trailing 27-13.
After a couple of W&J baskets to start the second quarter, Geneva put together a nice 9-2 run on buckets from San Nicolas and Milroy. With their lead having been cut to 12 points, the Presidents went on a 10-0 run of their own to push the lead above 20. The score at halftime was 45-26 in favor of W&J.
The third quarter started off with Geneva playing more disciplined basketball, and the GTs went on a 10-4 run early in the frame after allowing W&J to score the first bucket. The Presidents quickly regained control again, however, and pushed the lead back into the twenties before long. They finished the quarter on a 9-0 run, and Geneva entered the final break down 73-45.
Geneva finally got some consistent offense going in the fourth quarter, but by then it was too late for a comeback. The GTs did put together a 20-6 run that took up a large chunk of the period, but they ultimately fell 91-71.
Milroy led the women with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-5 from the three-point line. San Nicolas posted her eleventh double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and grabbing ten rebounds. The Presidents win was highlighted by some great shooting by Stellanie Loutsion, who scored 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting.
Geneva will travel to Bethany on Saturday before returning home to play Westminster next Wednesday in their final game of the regular season. Both games will play an important role for Geneva being able to qualify for the PAC playoffs.
