WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Junior Emily Garvin did everything she could to will the Geneva College women's basketball team to a victory at Waynesburg on Saturday, but in a back-and-forth affair, the Yellow Jackets pulled away late to win 83-71. Geneva dropped to 9-8 overall, 6-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).
Sophomore Aizlyn Thompson hit two early three-pointers to give Geneva a quick 6-2 lead, but Waynesburg responded with nine straight points to grab an 11-6 edge. The Yellow Jackets pushed their margin as high as 16-10, but the women pulled even late in the first quarter, 21-21, on a jumper from Garvin and a three-pointer from junior Anna Ulmer.
Geneva carried that run into the second quarter with two free throws from Ulmer and a bucket from senior Mackenzie Barricklow. Midway through the quarter, a jumper from freshman Libby Campbell gave the women their biggest lead of the half, 31-25. Waynesburg answered with a 10-2 run to regain the lead, though, and the score stayed within a bucket for the remainder of the half. A free throw from sophomore Monica Lammie sent Geneva into the break with a 39-38 advantage. Garvin led all scorers in the first half with 13 points.
Garvin opened the second half with four straight points, but Waynesburg responded with a run midway through the quarter to grab a 59-54 lead. Garvin continued to carry the load offensively, scoring 14 points in the frame to keep Geneva within 62-60 heading into the final quarter.
Geneva took a hit early in the fourth quarter when Barricklow fouled out, and that allowed the bigger Yellow Jackets to attack the offensive boards, allowing for several second and third chances, which Waynesburg ultimately used to its advantage. The Golden Tornadoes also went cold down the stretch of the fourth quarter. After senior Abby Shoaff hit a three-pointer with just over five minutes remaining, Waynesburg closed the game on a 14-2 run to pull away for the 83-71 victory.
Garvin matched her career high from last Saturday, finishing with 33 points while grabbing a career high 15 rebounds. She was especially impressive from the line, making 16-of-18 from the stripe. She was the only Golden Tornado in double figures. Barricklow did add ten rebounds before fouling out, while Ulmer finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Geneva finished the game 22-of-73 (30.1%) from the floor, just 6-of-30 (20%) from three-point range.
Waynesburg finished with a very balanced attack, with Kalista Friday leading five Yellow Jackets in double figures with 20 points. Waynesburg shot 23-of-73 (31.5%) from the floor, 9-of-34 (26.5%) from three-point range.
Geneva now faces its toughest stretch of the season, a three-game homestand against three of the top teams in the PAC, starting with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Allegheny on Wednesday.
