CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Geneva College women's basketball team opened play at the Lauren Hill Tip-Off Classic on Friday night, hosted by Mount St. Joseph University, and the Golden Tornadoes could not keep pace with a Trine squad that is ranked just outside the top 25 in Division III, falling 92-56 to the Thunder. Geneva is now 1-1 overall on the season.
Senior Emily Garvin got Geneva on the board with a bucket, and a three-pointer from junior Aizlyn Thompson gave the women an early 6-5 advantage. However, Garvin, Geneva's leading scorer, picked up two early fouls and went to the bench, and Trine took advantage by scoring 14 straight points, breaking through the Geneva full court pressure for easy layups.
Sophomore Arionna White finally ended the run with a three-pointer, but Trine finished the first quarter with a 28-12 lead.
Garvin did return in the second quarter and managed to work around her foul trouble to score seven more points in the period, but Trine took a 44-22 advantage into the half. Freshman Kassandra Garcia added a pair of three-pointers for the Golden Tornadoes.
The women were unable to make up any ground in the second half, as the Thunder steadily increased their lead throughout the final 20 minutes, eventually closing out the victory, 92-56.
Garvin led the offense again, scoring 17 points. Garcia finished with 12 points on four three-pointers, while White also reached double figures with 10 points. As a team the women shot 19-of-63 (30.2%) from the floor, 8-of-31 (25.8%) from three-point range.
Trine finished the game 37-of-71 (52.1%) from the floor and held a big advantage on the boards, 51-31. Four players scored in double figures for the Thunder, led by Olivia Mark's 21 points.
Things don't get any easier for the women on the second day of the tournament when Geneva takes on the hosts, Mount St. Joseph. Tipoff is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
