ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Geneva College women's basketball wrapped up play prior to Thanksgiving Break on Tuesday night at Mount Union, dropping a game to the Purple Raiders 82-46. The women are now 1-3 on the season.
Sophomore Destanie McCullough opened the scoring for the Golden Tornadoes with a bucket to answer an early Mount Union basket, but the Purple Raiders followed with 11 straight points to take a double-digit advantage. Sophomore Arionna White finally ended the run with a layup.
A three-pointer from senior Abby Shoaff pulled Geneva within 15-9 late in the first quarter, but the Golden Tornadoes were unable to find much success offensively the rest of the half. Over the next ten minutes, Mount Union outscored Geneva 26-6 before senior Anna Ulmer hit back-to-back buckets, one a three-pointer, to send the game to the halftime break with Mount Union leading 41-20.
Geneva was never able to cut into the deficit in the second half as both teams used the chance to get a number of reserves some extended minutes before Mount Union closed out the 82-46 victory.
Senior Emily Garvin was the only Golden Tornado to reach double figures, scoring 10 points while grabbing a team-high six rebounds. Ulmer added nine points as Geneva finished the game shooting 15-of-64 (23.4%) from the floor, 3-of-32 (9.4%) from three-point range.
Mount Union was led by Elizabeth Mason, who finished with 17 points. The Purple Raiders shot 27-of-72 (37.5%) from the floor, 5-of-24 (20.8%) from deep. Mount Union held a 57-35 edge in rebounds.
The women will now get a few days off to head home and enjoy Thanksgiving break. Geneva will be in action again next Wednesday at Grove City for its conference opener. The tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
