Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women Blow Past Wooster in Impressive Fashion

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team put together its best performance of the season on a snowy Saturday afternoon inside Metheny Fieldhouse, defeating the Wooster Fighting Scots in blowout fashion, 93-59, for an impressive non-conference victory.  The women won their second game in a row this week while improving to 3-5 overall.  Wooster dropped to 4-4 overall with the loss.

Senior Emily Garvin got Geneva on the board with two early buckets.  Wooster managed a brief early lead, 6-4, before a three-pointer from sophomore Destanie McCullough gave the women a lead they would never relinquish.  The accuracy from deep was a sign of things to come.

McCullough's triple kicked off a 17-4 Golden Tornado run.  Garvin scored eight of those points, giving her 12 points in the first nine minutes of the game, while freshman Kassandra Garcia continued her recent strong perimeter shooting with back-to-back three-pointers.  Geneva led 22-12 at the first break.

Junior Aizlyn Thompson added to the long-range success early in the second quarter, knocking down a pair of three-pointers to extend the Geneva advantage to 30-16 three minutes into the period.  Wooster never pulled closer than 12 points the rest of the half, and the Golden Tornadoes finished the quarter with a flurry.  Freshman Regan Kerr and senior Anna Ulmer knocked down three-pointers, while sophomore Arionna White hit a short jumper in the closing seconds to send Geneva into the break with a 46-26 advantage.  The women shot 8-of-17 from deep in the half and were led by Garvin's 16 points.

Geneva's only rough spot came early in the second half.  After a pair of Garvin free throws, the Golden Tornadoes turned the ball over three straight times leading to fast break layups for the Fighting Scots.  Wooster used the Geneva miscues to pull within 48-35 just over two minutes into the third quarter, forcing Head Coach Michael Grinder to use an early timeout.

Thompson pulled the momentum back to the Golden Tornadoes with a four-point possession.  She was fouled while shooting and made the first free throw.  She missed the second foul shot, but Ulmer grabbed the board and kicked the ball out to Thompson for a three-pointer.

Wooster eventually managed to pull within 11 points, 58-47, with a minute left in the third quarter, but that was as close as the Fighting Scots could get.  Geneva responded with a layup from Garvin and a three-pointer from McCullough, and Kerr closed the quarter with another triple to give the Golden Tornadoes a 68-51 lead at the final break.

The women put the game away early in the fourth quarter, if there was any doubt for the 131 fans who braved the weather.  Kerr opened the fourth quarter with another three-pointer, and after a Wooster bucket, Ulmer hit a layup, Garcia hit from deep again, Garvin scored, Ulmer knocked down a three-pointer and McCullough grabbed an offensive board and laid it in for an 83-53 lead with six minutes remaining.

Both coaches used the final minutes to go deep into their bench, as all 19 Golden Tornadoes in uniform saw action, while Wooster had 16 players log minutes.  Sophomore Katie Tipton finished off the scoring in the final seconds with her first collegiate points on a layup, setting off a big cheer from the Geneva bench, in the 93-59 victory.

Five days after Garvin threatened a quadruple-double in the win at Kenyon, she pushed for a triple-double against Wooster with 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the floor, to go along with 11 rebounds and five assists.  McCullough posted a career high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-3 from deep.  Ulmer added 11 points and Thompson 10 points, while Kerr and Garcia both finished with nine points apiece.

As a team, Geneva shot 35-of-80 (43.8%) from the floor, 16-of-41 (39%) from deep, and both those numbers were higher before some late misses from the bench.  The women also outrebounded Wooster 55-49 while forcing 21 turnovers.

The Fighting Scots struggled offensively all game, shooting just 21-of-76 (27.6%) from the floor, 5-of-27 (18.5%) from three-point range.  Wooster was led by Mackenzie Riccitelli's 16 points.

Saturday's victory was Geneva's first over Wooster since 1998, breaking an eight-game skid to the Fighting Scots.  The Golden Tornadoes wrap up their first semester with a road game at Division I Akron on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.   The game will count only as an exhibition for Geneva.  The women will then enjoy some time off before returning to action after Christmas break at a tournament at Roanoke, beginning on December 29.
