BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva women's basketball team found themselves facing a large 20-point deficit early on against Chatham University on Saturday afternoon, and they were never able to cut the difference back down, losing 101-48 to an excellent Cougar squad. The loss puts Geneva's record at 10-13 on the season, 7-11 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, and makes it very difficult for the women to qualify for the PAC playoffs going forward. Chatham now boasts an 18-5 overall record, 16-3 in the PAC.
Geneva grabbed an early 4-2 lead just one minute into the game on layups in close by freshman
Alexandra Cozzens and junior
Emily Garvin, and then another Garvin layup just a minute later made it 6-5 in favor of the women. The Cougars put their foot on the gas pedal at that point, taking off on a 22-point run to go in front 27-6 with two minutes to play in the quarter. Senior
Mackenzie Barricklow scored in close and sophomore
Aizlyn Thompson splashed a three-pointer before the period ended, but Geneva went into the quarter break trailing 34-13.
The remainder of the game did not get much better for the women, with a 5-point second quarter essentially eliminating any hopes of a comeback they may have had. Garvin scored eight points by herself in the third frame, but Chatham continued to build its lead over the course of the game, and the Golden Tornadoes were not able to respond.
Garvin finished as the leading scorer for the GTs, putting up 13 points and seven rebounds to go with five steals. Barricklow also had seven boards, scoring six points and blocking two shots. As a team, Geneva shot just 18-for-68 (27%) from the field and made just 4-of-38 (11%) shots from distance.
Ashlie Louden led Chatham with 25 points on 7-for-9 shooting, grabbing seven steals as well. Charjae Brock and Hannah Chenault finished with 17 and 13 points for the Cougars, respectively.
The GTs are not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs yet, but they would need to win their final two games and get some help from other teams in the PAC. Geneva wraps up its season with a home tilt against Grove City on Wednesday, February 19
th, at 5:30 p.m. before traveling to Franciscan for the regular season finale.
