Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Barricklow’s Career Performance Gives Women Victory in Season Finale

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Geneva women's basketball team ended their season with a bang with a 100-76 victory over Franciscan University Saturday afternoon. Seven first-quarter three-pointers allowed the GTs to gain a double-digit advantage early on, and they maintained that edge throughout the entire game, never trailing against the Barons. With the victory, the women end the 2024-25 season with a 11-14 overall record, 8-12 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play.

A three-pointer from senior Abby Shoaff on Geneva's opening possession got the offense going early for the women, and set the tone for the rest of the game. Junior Emily Garvin and senior Mackenzie Barricklow combined to score the next 12 Golden Tornado points, including two triples from Barricklow, and that paired with some terrific defense gave Geneva a 15-2 lead with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter. The hot shooting continued for the GTs as the period went on, with sophomore Aizlyn Thompson splashing three treys before the quarter break to put the GTs solidly in command, 29-6. The Barons scored a couple of baskets right at the end of the quarter to staunch the bleeding just a little bit, and Geneva led 29-10 after the first ten minutes.

Over the end of the first quarter and first part of the second, Franciscan scored 11 unanswered to pull within 12 points of the GTs, 29-17, but a reverse layup fby junior Anna Ulmer ended the run for the home side. A nice up-and-under move from Ulmer two minutes later gave the women a 37-24 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the half, but after Thompson nailed yet another three-pointer on the Golden Tornadoes' next possession, both sides' offenses went cold. A transition layup from freshman Alexandra Cozzens finally ended a two-minute scoring drought for Geneva, giving them a 42-26 advantage with just over two minutes to play. Barricklow drained another three before the half to send, and the GTs led 47-29 as halftime arrived.

Garvin and Barricklow took over in the third quarter, with Garvin scoring the first five points of the half for the GTs. Barricklow hit a trey from the top of the key to push Geneva's lead back over 20 for the first time in several minutes, 55-34. The Barons went on a 9-2 run to lower the deficit a little bit, but Garvin and Barricklow combined to score 15 of Geneva's final 16 points of the quarter to send the Golden Tornadoes in front 73-55 with one period to play.

The GTs didn't score in the final quarter until Shoaff splashed a three-ball two minutes in to push the women's advantage to 76-57. Despite some quality looks for Franciscan as the game drew on, Geneva was able to hold the Barons at bay thanks to more excellent three-point shooting. Back-to-back corner triples from Thompson put Geneva up 24 points, 90-66, for the women's largest lead of the game to that point. Shoaff hit another three to send Geneva over the 90-point mark, and then Barricklow capped off the best scoring performance of her career fittingly with two more three-pointers before the game ended.

Barricklow finished with a career-high 30 points, including eight three-pointers, which is tied for most in a game in school history, while adding 19 rebounds, six assists, five steals and three blocks.  Garvin added 28 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists, narrowly missing out on a triple-double, while Thompson knocked down six three-pointers and finished with 18 points.  As a team, Geneva hit 18 three-pointers.

The win brings an end to the Golden Tornadoes' season, and to the careers of Geneva's two seniors, Barricklow and Shoaff. Unfortunately, the women finished in eighth place in the PAC, two slots out of a playoff spot. The PAC playoffs are set to begin next week, with quarterfinal matchups taking place on Tuesday, February 25th.
