Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Case Western Too Much for Women’s Basketball

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Geneva women's basketball team traveled to Ohio for their final non-conference game of the season on Saturday, taking on Case Western Reserve on the road. The Spartans claimed the lead midway through the first quarter and did not relinquish it the rest of the way, winning the game 75-65. It is the third straight loss for the women, who fall to 3-8 on the season, while CWRU moves up to 7-4 overall.

The GTs got off to a flaming hot start at the beginning of the contest, hitting their first four shots of the game, two by senior Emily Garvin, and taking an 8-0 advantage in the process. It didn't take long for the Spartans to get right back in it, however, as they scored the next seven points to cut the difference to one. A three-pointer by Garvin kept Geneva in front, 11-7, but a 10-0 run from Case Western gave the hosts their first lead of the game, which they kept through the end of the first quarter.

Garvin drove in for a fast break layup to bring Geneva within four points early in the second quarter, 22-18. Consecutive jumpers by freshman Regan Kerr allowed the GTs to match CWRU's made baskets, but the Spartans built their lead up to as much as nine points before halftime. A trey from freshman Kassandra Garcia with six seconds left in the period cut the deficit to six, and Geneva trailed 44-38 at the break.

Kerr opened the third quarter with a triple of her own, making it a three-point game, and a few minutes later, Garvin knocked down a couple of free throws to narrow the gap to two. That was as close as the women would get the rest of the way, however, with Case Western immediately pumping their lead back to seven points. The Golden Tornadoes stuck with the host team for the rest of the contest but could not get within a possession, losing the game 75-65.

Garvin had a big game for the women, scoring a season-high 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting. She contributed five rebounds, four assists, and four steals as well in the loss. Sophomore Destanie McCullough was the only other double-digit scorer for the GTs, notching 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while Kerr finished with nine points, five boards, and two blocks. As a team, Geneva shot just 26-for-67 (38.8%) from the field and only 4-of-27 (14.8%) from three-point range.

The women return to the friendly confines of Metheny Fieldhouse this week, hosting Hiram College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup on Wednesday, January 7th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., with the men's game to follow.
