Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women Make it Two Straight Victories with Big Win over Thiel

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team picked up its second straight victory on Wednesday night with an 84-50 win over visiting Thiel.  The victory moves the women one step closer to a potential postseason berth and improves their record to 8-14 overall, 5-8 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

Thiel actually came out early with the better of the play, jumping ahead 7-2 in the first three minutes before a three-pointer from freshman Kassandra Garcia got Geneva going.  Two minutes later, a layup from sophomore Destanie McCullough pulled the Golden Tornadoes even, 12-12.  After a bucket from Thiel, layups from Garcia and McCullough gave the women their first lead of the game, 16-14, a lead they would never relinquish.

In fact, those two buckets from Garcia started a 13-point run over the next four minutes, carrying into the first minute of the second quarter.  A three-pointer from junior Aizlyn Thompson and back-to-back layups from sophomore Arionna White capped off the stretch, and Thiel never recovered.  A three-pointer from White in the closing moments of the half gave the women their biggest lead of the game to that point, 46-27, heading into halftime.

Senior Emily Garvin, the second leading scorer in the conference who was quiet in the first half offensively, opened the third quarter with back-to-back layups, and senior Anna Ulmer and White followed with baskets to open up a 54-27 lead two minutes into the second half, and Geneva cruised the rest of the game, eventually closing out the win, 84-50.

Garcia finished with a career high 15 points to lead five players in double figures.  Ulmer scored 13 points while grabbing eight rebounds, and Garvin again stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.  McCullough added 12 points, while White finished with 11 points.

Geneva again used its pressure defense to harass the Tomcats all game, forcing 29 Thiel turnovers that led to 35 points.  The women finished the game shooting 32-of-81 (39.5%) from the floor, 10-of-35 (28.6%) from three-point range.

Thiel was led by Emily Betsinger, who finished with a game high 20 points.

The women now sit in a tie for third place in the North Division with Westminster, one game ahead of Hiram.  The top four teams in the division make the postseason, and Geneva faces both Hiram and Westminster in the final week of the season.  Up first, though, is a road contest at Chatham this Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m.
