Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women Hold on for Senior Day Victory over Westminster

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team held off a late Titan rally on Saturday afternoon inside Metheny Fieldhouse, earning a 72-66 victory over rival Westminster to send a trio of Golden Tornadoes, graduate student Abby Shoaff and seniors Emily Garvin and Anna Ulmer, off with a Senior Day victory.  Geneva finishes the regular season with a 9-16 overall record, 6-10 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), and the women will now prepares for the PAC Playoffs starting next week.

Ulmer opened the game with a three-pointer, but the game remained close throughout the first six minutes.  A layup from Garvin knotted the score at 12-12 before the Titans put together a 10-2 run to create some distance.  However, another three-pointer from Ulmer and an offensive rebound and bucket by Garvin pulled Geneva within 22-19 at the first break.

Westminster opened the second quarter with a basket, but Geneva followed with a 10-2 run, with sophomore Arionna White accounting for seven of those points, to retake the lead, 29-26.  The Titans wouldn't lead again until late in the game.

Geneva continued its strong play with a good finish to the half.  Back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Kassandra Garcia with two minutes remaining, followed by a bucket from freshman Kira Bonanno, sent the women into the halftime break with a 40-32 advantage.

Ulmer opened the second half the same way she did the first half, with a three-pointer.  Shoaff notched her 100th career three-pointer a moment later, and then a layup from junior Aizlyn Thompson midway through the quarter extended the Geneva advantage to its biggest of the game, 49-34.  It looked like the women were going to pull away for a comfortable win, but turnovers and cold shooting allowed Westminster to rally.  The Titans closed within three points with a minute left in the quarter before a bucket from Garvin sent Geneva into the final break with a 54-49 edge.

As she has done for most of the past two seasons, Garvin carried Geneva during the final period, willing her squad to victory.  She opened the quarter with back-to-back baskets, eventually scoring Geneva's first five baskets of the final quarter.  To the Titans' credit, though, they kept battling, pulling with two points, 60-58, midway through the quarter.

Garvin responded with back-to-back baskets against, the final two of her five straight buckets to open the fourth quarter, but Westminster refused to fold.  The Titans followed with an 8-1 run to grab a 66-65 lead with two minutes remaining, their first lead since early in the second quarter.

On Geneva's next possession, however, Thompson was fouled on a three-point shot, and the junior calmly stepped to the line and converted all three foul shots.  The Golden Tornadoes would not trail again.  Westminster did not score over the final two minutes, and fittingly Garvin sealed the victory with two free throws with 23 seconds remaining to close out the scoring in the 72-66 victory.

Garvin, who battled foul trouble in the first half and sat for most of the second quarter with three fouls, led the team with another stat-filled line of 22 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists.  Ulmer also had a key game on her Senior Day, finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds.  White added 12 points off the bench.

Geneva finished the game 25-of-68 (36.8%) from the floor, 10-of-31 (32.3%) from three-point range.  The Golden Tornadoes also forced 27 Westminster turnovers.

The Titans shot 23-of-55 (41.8%) from the floor, 6-of-18 (33.3%) from three-point range and were led by Maddie Syka's 14 points.

The victory secures the No. 3 seed in the North Division, which will send Geneva out on the road to start the PAC Playoffs at the No. 2 seed from the South Division, Washington & Jefferson.  Their quarterfinal matchup will tip off at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday night.
