Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Slow Start Too Much to Overcome for Women against Grove City

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team got off to a poor start in its home matchup against Grove City on Wednesday night inside Metheny Fieldhouse, and the Golden Tornadoes could never recover in losing 94-66.  The women have now lost four straight and are 6-14 on the season, 3-8 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).

Geneva took an early lead, 5-2, behind a jumper from sophomore Arionna White and a three-pointer from freshman Regan Kerr.  Unfortunately, not much else went right for the women in the first half.  The Wolverines finished the first quarter on a 21-5 run to take a 23-10 advantage into the first break.  Cold shooting and turnovers plagued the Golden Tornadoes in the quarter.

The Wolverines extended their lead to as high as 42-19 in the second quarter before Geneva closed the half on a 10-4 run to cut the deficit down to 46-29 at the halftime break.  The Geneva women shot 30% in the first half while committing 17 turnovers, compared to a 55% shooting effort from the floor from Grove City.  Geneva did force 15 Wolverine turnovers in the frenetic first half.  White led the offense with nine points in the half.

The women carried their strong end to the first half into the third quarter, and another three-pointer from Kerr and a bucket from sophomore Destanie McCullough capped off a 12-5 run to begin the second half, cutting the Grove City lead down to 51-41.  That was as close as Geneva could get, though.  The Wolverines knocked down a couple three-pointers to extend their lead back to 73-50 at the final break, and Grove City eventually closed out the victory, 94-66.

Senior Emily Garvin battled foul trouble again in the game, finishing with ten points and nine rebounds in just 23 minutes to lead the women.  White also added ten points.  Geneva shot 24-of-69 (34.8%) from the floor, 11-of-38 (28.9%) from three-point range.

Meredith Sherrerd and Reese Hasley led the Wolverines with 21 and 19 points, respectively.  Grove City shot an impressive 36-of-68 (52.9%) from the floor, 7-of-20 (35.0%) from three-point range.

Geneva will be back in action on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. tipoff at Franciscan.
