Men Remain in Top Form with Conference Victory
Beaver Falls, PA – After tying Grove City last Wednesday 1-1, the Geneva College men's soccer team came home to get back on track with a 3-0 conference win over Washington and Jefferson College. The squad moves forward with an overall record of 10-2-2, 4-0-1 in President's Athletic Conference (PAC) play.
"I thought the first half both teams battled really hard," said head coach
Gary Dunda. "We went into half time and I told the guys that I thought they had more to give. And they responded. Always great to get a conference win, now we have to be ready for Thomas More."
Despite allowing the Presidents to take the first shot from outside of the box, the Golden Tornadoes responded quickly with a counter attack that was tipped by a defender to force a quick Geneva corner. Both teams remained in high pressure offense forcing
Luke Nolan's quick reaction to make a crucial save with eighteen minutes remaining in the opening half.
The opening minutes of the second half was exciting times for the Golden Tornadoes. After earning three repeating corners, senior
Abel Carleton found the feet of
Jake Broadwick. Broadwick turned and lifted the ball to the head of sophomore midfielder
Jo Osaki for the game winner and 1-0 score.
In the 38
th minute of the second half,
Liam O'Halloran took control of a loose ball at the top of the box to drive the ball in over the crowd for his tenth goal of the season and the 2-0 score.
Seven minutes later, senior
Josh Brenize delivered a cross to the back side of the box to the head of fellow senior
Gib McCracken for the 3-0 final score.
"I thought Gib had a fantastic game for us. Not only scoring the goal but also with his overall effort and drive in the game. After half time being told that there was more to give, he just responded and that was really cool to see," commented Dunda after the match.
The hosts out shot their visitors 13-9 and had 11 corners to their 1. The shutout was Nolan and McCracken's sixth in the season and fourth in conference action.
Geneva travels to Thomas More on Tuesday to face off against the Saints for 2:30 kick off.
