Geneva Clinches 2nd Seed With Comeback Victory
Waynesburg, PA – The Geneva College men's soccer team will begin their PAC title defense at home next Wednesday in the PAC semi-finals after securing the number two seed with a 3-1 win at Waynesburg in the conference finale. The final conference victory gives the Golden Tornadoes an overall record of 12-3-2, 6-1-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
The Yellow Jackets defended their home turf by scoring the first goal of the match in the seventh minute. However, senior forward
Abel Carleton provided the spark needed for Geneva to start to turn the tide. He found the back of the net in the 18
th minute off the assist of
Devaughn Johns for the 1-1 tie. Geneva outshot its hosts 10-6 in the opening half yet was unable to find the back of the net again before half time.
Geneva continued its attack until
Josh Brenize was able to connect with senior defender
Ben Shoemaker to a score with a header to the back post for the 2-1 game winner in the 68
th minute. As time was running out in the half, senior
Gib McCracken converted a penalty kick for the insurance goal and 3-1 final score. Geneva outshot the hosts 9-5 in the second half.
Goalkeeper
Luke Nolan and the defense only gave up one corner kick and Nolan earned three saves in the match.
With regular season action complete for the Golden Tornadoes, the team will return to the pitch for one final non-conference regular season match on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. when it takes on Alfred State College for senior night.
