Football Loses on the Road to Grove City
Grove City, PA – On a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon the Geneva College football team made the short trip north to take on the Grove City Wolverines. Unfortunately for Geneva, the trip did not prove fruitful as it lost 25-7. The loss drops Geneva's overall record to 3-5, 2-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). Grove City improved to 3-5 overall, 3-3 in the PAC.
Grove City opened the scoring eight minutes into the game after a punt return set up the Wolverines inside Geneva territory, and Grove City took advantage of the short field to go up 7-0.
Geneva got on the board late in the 1st quarter when Bryan Stafford took the first play after a Geneva defensive stop and ran 69 yards to tie the score at 7-7. Unfortunately for Geneva, that proved to be the only time Geneva dented the scoreboard for the remainder of the afternoon.
Grove City retook the lead early in the 2nd quarter with another touchdown run that put the home team back up 13-7. Geneva had a chance late in the quarter to regain the lead, but a fumble deep in Grove City territory kept the game at 13-7 going into halftime.
Unfortunately the 2nd half didn't prove any better for the Golden Tornadoes. Grove City scored late in the 3rd period to go up 19-7, and Geneva was never able to mount a comeback. Another Grove City touchdown early in the 4th quarter ended the scoring, 25-7.
Turnovers once again proved problematic for the Golden Tornadoes as they lost three fumbles on the day. Stafford led the offense with 113 yards rushing on 18 carries, while Trewon Marshall added 74 yards on 13 carries.
Defensively Torrin Sallis led the team with 10 tackles, while Joe Shively and Bryan Weyant added 7 tackles apiece. Shively also added an interception, while Tyler Cann and Zach Hall added fumble recoveries, as the defense forced three turnovers of its own.
Geneva returns to Reeves Field for the final time in 2017 for Senior Day when they welcome Washington & Jefferson on Saturday, November 4, for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. Washington & Jefferson enters the contest with an undefeated 8-0 record, 6-0 in the PAC.
