Geneva Breaks Away at Home in Third Quarter
Beaver Falls, PA – Geneva earned its first home victory thanks to a breakout performance in the third quarter. Geneva held a comfortable 21-14 lead over the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets at the half but wasn't done. The Golden Tornadoes ensured the win with another two visits to the end zone in the third for a 35-14 final. The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Homecoming win raises Geneva's overall record to 3-2, 2-1 in the PAC. The decision hands Waynesburg its sixth straight loss moving its record to 0-6, 0-4 in the PAC.
Waynesburg attempted to silence Geneva's homecoming buzz with an opening touchdown drive. The Golden Tornadoes were not fazed, their answer coming from
Trewon Marshall's three-yard rushing touchdown.
Andrew Dowler's good point after touchdown (PAT) leveled the board at seven points apiece.
Marshall struck again in the last minute of the first, posting a 33 yard rushing touchdown (14-7). Waynesburg held Marshall to 170 yards, 39 yards below his average game but the defensive efforts weren't enough against the Golden Tornadoes offensive unit.
The Golden Tornadoes tallied 367 rushing yards on 62 carries, earning 23 first downs and winning the possession battle with 36:33 minutes under their control.
Geneva's third quarter explosion featured touchdown runs by
Nick Monteleone (11 yards) and
Collin Kendrick (41 yards).
Stafford showcased a few plays in the air, going 4-5-0 for 62 yards. On the ground, he tallied 63 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown in the second quarter.
"Our offense did better," said head Coach
Geno DeMarco. "Our defense buckled down after the first drive. I thought our kids played hard."
Geneva will look to extend its two –game win streak on the road at Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, October 14. The Tartans were handed their first loss today at home from #16 Washington & Jefferson in a 27-20 final. The Golden Tornadoes (3-2, 2-1 PAC) will take on the Tartans (5-1, 3-1 PAC) at 1:00 p.m.
