Geneva Earns First Conference Road Win
Geneva Earns First Conference Road Win
New Wilmington, PA –  The Geneva College men's soccer had their way throughout much of their 2-0 victory at Westminster College on Saturday (Oct. 7). Geneva continued to dominate the offensive side of the ball as they scored twice, once in each half of play. Heading into the rest of its conference play, Geneva is 9-2-1 overall, 3-0 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

"It is always difficult to win away PAC matches and Westminster fought hard for 90 minutes today," commented head coach Gary Dunda.  "With that being said I could not be more proud of my group.  They were focused and determined the entire match."

Geneva brought its offense out early with a corner kick taken by sophomore midfielder Jake Broadwick in the opening three minutes of the game. David McKinley had the first real opportunity for the Golden Tornadoes in the fifth minutes when he fired a shot that sailed high of the mark.

Westminster put their first shot on frame in thirteenth minute of the game when the Titans were able to hit the crossbar. Junior goalkeeper Luke Nolan remained on his toes after the near miss to make the first save of the game for either team.

In the 29th minute, Broadwick won the ball on the sideline and beat the defender down the line to deliver the cross through the box. McKinley got his boot on the ball for the opening goal and game winner giving Geneva its 1-0 half time lead. The goal was his third goal this season.

Westminster found a new offensive drive after the visitor goal. The teams traded corners and shots through the remainder of the half. However, Geneva showed offensive dominance as it outshot its host 9-5 in the opening forty-five minutes of play.

Picking right up where they left off in the first half, the GTs forced two corners in the first three minutes of play. Josh Brenize finished scoring for the Golden Tornadoes in the opening four minutes of the second half. His goal came from Michael Pohlod for the 2-0 score. As the clock continued to wind down, Geneva held the majority of possession and eliminated shooting opportunities for the home squad.

"I thought the way Josh Brenize and Devaughn Johns attacked the flanks really put them back on their heels," said Dunda. "Liam O'Halloran and Abel Carleton made life tough on the Westminster backs with their constant attacking spirit.  We are now excited to face Grove City on Wednesday."

The Geneva men's soccer team will head to Grove City College on Wednesday (Oct. 11) for its second conference away game. Their kick-off time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Grove City's grass field.
