Wooster, OH—On Tuesday evening the Geneva College women's basketball team and Head Coach Lori Wynn traveled west to open the season against the College of Wooster Fighting Scots. The Golden Tornadoes hung tough early, trailing by only four points after the 1st quarter, before eventually succumbing 68-57.
Early on Geneva's improved balance began to pay immediate dividends as four different players scored the team's first four baskets, and at the end of the 1st quarter, Geneva was trailing just 19-15.
Wooster began to stretch its lead out in the 2nd quarter and headed into halftime with a 34-24 lead. Even then, eight different players had already scored for Geneva, led by junior Callie Ford's six points.
Any hopes Geneva had of a comeback all but ended early in the 3rd quarter. Wooster opened the second half on an 18-4 run that extended its lead out to 52-28 before settling on a 60-40 lead at the end of the quarter.
To Geneva's credit, it didn't give up, using full court pressure to open the 4th quarter on a 17-5 run to get within eight points. But the Golden Tornadoes could not get any closer than that and eventually lost 68-57.
Despite the loss, Coach Wynn had to be encouraged by the fight her young squad showed in the 4th quarter. She had to be even more encouraged by the play of Ford, who was the best player on the floor most of the night. Ford stuffed the stat sheet by scoring a game high 18 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Junior Jodie Carlson chipped in with 9 points as Geneva finished the night with ten different scorers.
The Golden Tornadoes continue their season opening road stretch with a visit to Franciscan University on Saturday, November 18, for a 2 p.m. tip-off. Coach Wynn's squad opens the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, November 21, with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off against Washington & Jefferson.
