Meadville, PA—On Tuesday night the Geneva men's basketball team made its first road trip of the season as the Golden Tornadoes traveled north to play Allegheny College. In a tight, back and forth game, Geneva eventually fell, 65-61. Geneva falls to 2-1 on the season.
Allegheny jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but Geneva responded with the next seven points to go back ahead. From there the first half remained close, with neither team gaining more than a five point advantage, and Geneva went to the halftime break trailing by just one, 32-31.
Early in the second half, with the score tied at 35, Geneva went on a 10-0 run to open up its biggest lead of the night, 45-35, just five minutes into the half. But Allegheny responded immediately with its own run, and with eight minutes remaining in the game, Allegheny regained the lead 49-48.
From there the lead traded hands multiple times. Senior forward Jimmy Leichliter hit a big 3-pointer with two minutes remaining to tie the game at 61, but Geneva would be unable to score again as four late free throws from Allegheny proved to be the difference in the 65-61 loss.
"We battled really hard against a really good team," Head Coach Jeff Santarsiero commented. "We have to shoot the ball better and get the stops when they matter. I'm proud of our effort on the road, though. It is a good building block early in the season."
Sophomore forward Ethan Moose led the Golden Tornadoes with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Leichliter also added 15 points, though he struggled to find the range from the 3-point line, finishing 3-15 from deep, as the whole team managed to shoot just 5-23 overall from behind the arc. Sophomore guard Noah Damazo had his best game of the year, finishing with 11 points.
Geneva gets a couple of days off for the Thanksgiving break before it heads back out onto the road on Saturday for a 7 p.m. tip-off with Hiram College.
