Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Geneva Women Lose at Bethany

Bethany, WV—The Geneva College women's basketball team traveled to Bethany College on Wednesday night in search of its first conference victory.  Unfortunately for the Golden Tornadoes, Bethany proved too strong on the evening, and Geneva dropped the game, 62-51.  Geneva fell to 2-3 overall, 0-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Bethany picked up its first win on the season to improve to 1-4 overall, 1-0 in the PAC.

Geneva started well, jumping out to a 13-8 lead after the 1st quarter.  Geneva still held an 18-14 lead midway through the 2nd period when Bethany finished out the half on a 13-5 run to take a 27-23 lead into the halftime break.  Junior Callie Ford led the Golden Tornadoes with 11 points in the half.

Bethany carried that momentum into the 3rd quarter as the Bison opened the half on a 10-4 run to open a 37-27 lead five minutes into the quarter. Geneva didn't give up and cut the lead down to just four points, 43-39, giving itself a chance heading into the final quarter.

Senior Lydia Songer opened the 4th quarter with a bucket that cut the lead to 43-41, but Geneva could not get any closer than that the rest of the way.  Bethany responded with another run, this time 8-0, to push the lead back out to 51-41, and Geneva was not able to get closer than six points the rest of the way, losing 62-51.

"I thought we really battled," Head Coach Lori Wynn said.  "We made too many mistakes, but we continued to fight throughout the game and never gave up."

Ford led the team offensively with 18 points.  Junior Noelle Henry chipped in with 8 points off the bench.  Geneva played well enough defensively, but the key stat was rebounding.  Bethany out-rebounded Geneva 47-14, including 21 offensive rebounds.

Geneva travels to Thiel College on Saturday night, December 2, for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.  Geneva then travels to Houghton College next Tuesday, December 5, for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off before returning back to Metheny Fieldhouse next Saturday, December 9, against Saint Vincent at 1:00 p.m.
