Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Geneva Women Fall at Thiel

Greenville, PA—On Saturday afternoon the Geneva College women's basketball traveled to take on Thiel College in another Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game.  Geneva started well but ultimately could not hang on against the Tomcats, losing 65-54.  Geneva drops to 2-4 overall, 0-3 in the PAC, while Thiel improves to 3-3 overall, 2-1 in the PAC.

Geneva got off to a good start as it jumped to a 12-6 lead near the end of the first quarter.  Thiel responded, though, with a 13-2 run over the next five minutes, and midway through the second quarter Geneva trailed 19-14.  Geneva cut the lead to 22-21 right before the break, but a last second 3-pointer by Thiel gave the Tomcats a 25-21 lead going into halftime.

Unfortunately for Geneva, it came out cold in the third quarter, and Thiel took advantage.  The only points Geneva scored the first six minutes were on two Emily Melnek free throws, and by the time Lauren Tipton hit a layup with four minutes in the quarter left, Geneva found itself down 36-25.  Another Thiel 3-pointer at the buzzer of the third quarter put Geneva in a 41-29 hole heading into the fourth quarter.

Geneva did make a run in the fourth quarter, aided by some full court pressure that created multiple Thiel turnovers, and when Jodie Carlson hit a layup with three minutes to go, the Golden Tornadoes had cut the lead to 50-45.  Geneva could not any closer, though, as Thiel responded by scoring the next nine points, and Geneva lost 65-54.

"Thiel played hard," Head Coach Lori Wynn stated after the game.  "We unfortunately did not match their intensity tonight.  We'll bounce back and learn from this.  The season is a process and we need to keep learning."

Junior Noelle Henry had her best game of the season as she led the team offensively with 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting.  Senior Lydia Songer also added nine points in the loss.  Geneva struggled offensively all game as the team shot just 31% from the floor, including 20% from 3-point range.

Geneva finishes this three game road stretch when it travels to Houghton College on Tuesday, December 9, for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.  The Golden Tornadoes return home next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off against PAC foe Saint Vincent.
